Zebra blinds vs roller shades: which is right for you?

The two most popular choices we fit in Calgary and Edmonton — explained honestly, so you can decide by room, light and privacy, not by a catalogue photo.

The short answer

Choose zebra blinds when you want to change the light without raising the blind — living rooms, dining rooms and street-facing windows, where you want daylight and privacy at the same time. Choose roller shades when you want the cleanest look, full blackout, or a blind that disappears completely when open — bedrooms, media rooms, kitchens and bathrooms.

Many homes end up with both: zebra in the living areas, roller blackout in the bedrooms. That is a normal, sensible mix — not a compromise.

How each one works

Zebra blinds

Two layers of fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands slide past each other. Line sheer up with sheer for bright daylight; slide a little further and the solid bands overlap the sheer for a soft, filtered glow; slide further still and solid covers sheer for privacy — all without raising the blind. Roll it fully up when you want the window completely clear.

Light options: sheer-aligned daylight, half-overlap light filtering, solid-aligned privacy. Dim-out band fabrics are available for stronger light blocking.

Operation: cord, cordless, motorized or wand-operated. Motorized can be made smart — Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit.

Roller shades

A single panel of fabric rolls around a tube and unrolls to cover the glass. Stop it at any height for glare control, roll it fully down for privacy, or roll it completely up into a slim cassette so the window is clear.

Light options: sunscreen (open weave — keep your view out while cutting glare and UV), light-filtering (soft daylight, privacy by day and night), and blackout (coated fabric that blocks light for bedrooms and media rooms). Two fabrics can be paired in one dual shade on many windows.

Operation: cord, cordless, motorized or wand-operated. Motorized can be made smart — Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit.

Room by room

Our usual recommendation, based on the installs we do most.

Bedroom

Roller blackout. Sleep needs darkness, and blackout fabric is the only one of the two that truly blocks light. Add motorized operation if the window is hard to reach.

Living room

Zebra. You get daylight during the day and privacy in the evening without ever raising the blind — and the banded look suits the room it is most seen in.

Street-facing window

Zebra, or roller in a light-filtering fabric. Both give daytime privacy; zebra gives you finer control over how much light comes through.

Kitchen & bathroom

Roller. Simple to wipe clean, rolls fully out of the way, and sunscreen or light-filtering fabric handles steam, splashes and glare well.

Questions we get asked

Can I have blackout zebra blinds?

Not full blackout. Zebra offers dim-out band fabrics for stronger light blocking, but if a room must be dark — a bedroom, nursery or media room — roller blackout is the right product.

Can both be motorized and smart?

Yes. Both come cord, cordless, motorized or wand-operated, and motorized versions can connect to Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit for voice, app and schedule control.

Do you measure and fit both?

Yes — every blind is custom-made to your exact window measurements, measured and fitted by our own team in Calgary, Edmonton and surrounding communities in Alberta. Your consultation is free, and we bring the fabrics to you so you can decide in your own light.

What if I still cannot decide?
